Mass Sterilisation Project in Pniel, Stellenbosch
15 and 16 April 2014 marked the start of Watershed Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Fund’s mass sterilisation project in the picturesque town of Pniel, just outside Stellenbosch.
The Watershed team, along with the Franschhoek SPCA ventured into a small township on 15 April to start dipping and the dogs and to speak to the owners to get their consent to sterilise their pets. The following day we went back and, after a bit of bundu bashing, we had collected the 25 animals, 18 dogs and 7 cats, that were booked for sterilisation.
Once all the animals were loaded into the vehicles, they were transported to Franschhoek SPCA where the incredible Dr Ilse Gersbach from Stellenbosch Animal Hospital and her assistant were ready to get started. We are happy to report that all 25 animals where returned to their owners that same afternoon, all sterilised, dewormed, fully vaccinated and deflead. We also educated the township residents on caring for their pets, made sure that all the animals had enough fresh water and food and we handed out easter eggs to the children.
We will be returning regularly to make sure that the animals are fed and cared for properly. Our work in Pniel, however, has only just started! We were amazed at how open the residents were to having their pets sterilised – we were even stopped next to the road by a lady who asked if we could perhaps spay her dog as well as her neighbour’s pets. We would love to help these people as they are so grateful and also willing to be educated but we are in desperate need for funds to continue our project. There are so many animals that still need to be spayed and we would also like to start a kennel drive to make sure that the dogs have proper shelter for the coming winter.
THIS SMALL SPAYATHON HAS AMOUNTED TO R9367.25 SO FAR AT THE VET. SO PLEASE IF YOU CAN ASSIST WITH ANY CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS THIS VERY IMPORTANT STERILISATION, IT WOULD BE SO APPRECIATED AS WE WOULD LOVE TO CONTINUE IN OTHER AREAS ASWELL AND CARRY ON WITH THIS PROJECT.
If you would like to contribute to this project you are welcome to donate to Watershed Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Fund (NPO nr 085-455)
